A 23-year-old Filipino kitchen worker didn’t know anything about the special draw, so he queued outside a restaurant, and his colleagues sent him to pick the tickets.

The jackpot for the September 2014 mega draw reached HK$164,492,500 (US$102,952,549). The rollover in September 2012 reached $123,979,675 and the fourth mega draw was in May 2011. In 1997, the lottery featured a special’snowball’ draw, with 39 winning tickets scooping HK$750,000 each. There have been around 500 lottery winners with top prizes of HK$10 million each.
